The capsule wardrobe trend, which has recently appeared in various media, is a minimalist wardrobe arrangement that many of us are now familiar with. Although most of us learned about it through social media platforms, the origins of this minimalist approach go back much further.
What is this "capsule wardrobe"?
As its name suggests, a capsule refers to a small, encompassing container. This concept, first encountered in American sources in the 1940s, was later re-introduced by Susie Faux in the 1970s, and further concretized in 1985 by Donna Karan with her 7-piece version. Its starting point, as a reaction to fast consumption, is to combine a small number of timeless, high-quality, and harmonious pieces to offer effortless elegance.
Moving to the present day, when was the last time you stood in front of your wardrobe and felt the desperation of "I have nothing to wear"? It's not too hard to guess; similar thoughts cross our minds several times a week. Due to increasingly fast-paced lives and busyness, today's urban women, juggling many tasks at work and home, feel the pressure to be chic and appropriately dressed at all times. Although new pieces added to the wardrobe during shopping are thought to alleviate this burden, it only takes a few weeks to realize that they actually reinforce it, turning it into an inescapable vicious cycle. It is at this point that the "capsule wardrobe concept" comes to the aid of the urban woman who does not want to compromise her style in a busy schedule. Matching the right products with a minimalist approach and getting rid of excess to achieve both comfort and effortless elegance is the first step to creating a capsule wardrobe. Simple, plain, basic, effortless yet chic. In short, "less is more."
What should be in a capsule wardrobe?
First of all, everyone's style and needs are unique, but many stylish and comfortable combinations can still be achieved with a few simplified formulas. Supporting Donna Karan, many people say they can achieve a stylish capsule with just 7 or 10 pieces, and the sea of information on the internet is full of beautiful combination suggestions supporting this idea.
The first step to take is to get rid of excess items in the wardrobe and conduct a needs analysis. Then, like laying the foundation of a building, create the first layer with basic pieces. We also need to mention that the color palette is very important. Especially in recent years, it is a smart investment to include natural colors, which are very trendy, in your wardrobe.
So, if we were to prepare a "fall capsule wardrobe" consisting of 10 pieces, white and black basic t-shirts should be at the top of the list. A white shirt and a plain black dress are also must-haves. In addition to a pair of fabric trousers in one of the above colors, including denim in the wardrobe and pairing these pieces with white sneakers or canvas shoes allows us to create easy and stylish combinations. If we add a leather jacket and a black blazer for outerwear, we would have almost completed our list. As the last piece, with a plain black boot, our capsule wardrobe is ready to use!
To enrich and diversify combinations, we can make our final touches with accessories such as jewelry, scarves, belts, hats, and of course, bags, and achieve comfortable and practical elegance with peace of mind. As we said at the beginning, anything that saves time and is effortlessly managed is a friend to today's urban woman. Therefore, we also loved this concept and wanted to share it with you.
